Abstract

bstract. The paper investigates methodology used to analyze academic research areas and to
describe university research output in a more objective manner. The analysis of bibliometrics
presented in the study covers Vladivostok State University (VVSU) publications that were ob-
tained from the Scopus database in January 2023. VOSviewer is used as a bibliometric mapping
tool. The paper concludes that bibliometric data may include inconsistencies in authors' names
and initials and explains how to create thesaurus files in VOSviewer to eliminate possible in-
consistencies. Differences are revealed in research output mapping depending on whether full
or fractional counting was applied in order to evaluate authors' contributions to scientific pub-
lications. The authors con-clude that counting methods employed are of utmost importance
when it comes to data visuali-zation. The bibliometric mapping has helped to identify 8 out of 9
VVSU major research areas, which can be looked upon as a network and temporally which re-
flects the continuity of research. Data on the number of academic articles and references, the
relations between authors or au-thor clusters have helped to achieve greater objectivity of the
research. Four maps have been made available online to show a vast potential bibliometric
mapping can offer for evaluation of aca-demic research areas and to emphasize the importance
of the methodology employed. Links were given for downloading datasets which allow research-
ers to trace and follow the steps of the re-search.
